About Pilcrow Marketing

We’re authors and marketers working together to make book promotion simple, sustainable, and built for self-published writers who handle their own marketing.

We’ve always worked together. Our journey began at Wyrding Ways Press, where we helped indie authors edit, format, and publish their books. That experience showed us the challenges authors face once the manuscript is finished, especially the steep climb of reaching readers.

To close that gap, we stepped into marketing. We took on roles in a marketing company and spent years learning how to connect products and people in different industries. From content writing and editing to leading campaigns, analyzing data, and building systems, we learned what actually helps people grow.

Pilcrow Marketing is the return to our roots. It’s how we bring everything we’ve learned back to where our passion truly lies: helping indie authors. With publishing experience and more than 20 years in marketing, we’ve built our reputation as author marketing experts who guide writers and give them tools, clarity, and confidence to market their books without the overwhelm.

Why We Exist

Our mission is simple: to stand beside authors and readers, transforming creativity into marketing power through strategies that are innovative, intelligent, and engaging.

We believe every author deserves more than surface-level advice. Our goal is to make marketing approachable, practical, and sustainable so writers can focus on their craft while building careers that last.

The Apropos Books & Pilcrow Marketing Connection

Pilcrow and Apropos are two sides of the same coin. Pilcrow equips authors with the systems, tools, and confidence to market their books. Apropos Books connects readers with daily ebook deals across genres.

Together, they create a full-circle ecosystem: authors learn how to market, and readers discover new books.

Advertising with Apropos Books

Pilcrow authors also gain access to advertising opportunities through the Apropos Books newsletter, a daily deal email built for engaged readers who are ready to buy.

Audience Reach

Our newsletter is read by thousands of subscribers, primarily women aged 35–54, who consistently click, buy, and share book recommendations.

High Engagement

Open rates and click-throughs exceed typical industry averages, with subscribers actively seeking their next read every day.

Flexible Placements

Choose from featured deal slots, genre-specific highlights, or banner placements to match your book with the right readers.

Built for Authors

Unlike generic ad networks, Apropos focuses solely on books — meaning your work is showcased to a curated, book-loving audience.

This advertising channel creates a direct bridge between Pilcrow’s training and Apropos’ readership. You’ll not only learn how to market effectively but also have a proven platform where your book can be discovered.

The Experience Behind Pilcrow

Together, we bring more than 20 years in marketing and years of hands-on publishing experience. One of us is a published author who grew from content writer to director-level leadership inside a marketing agency, managing campaigns, building strategies, and delivering measurable results. The other is a former Director of Content with a decade of experience creating high-performing campaigns, developing templates, and building systems that make marketing sustainable.

Along the way, we’ve edited and formatted books, supported indie authors through self-publishing, and written everything from newsletters to sales copy. We’ve doubled email open rates, guided clients through their first large-scale projects, and built tools that continue to drive results long after launch.

What sets us apart is that we’ve lived both sides of the publishing world. We know the challenges authors face, and we’ve spent our careers designing strategies that cut through the noise. That’s why Pilcrow exists: to give indie authors clear, practical systems they can trust. When people ask what to know about Pilcrow Marketing, it’s this: we combine publishing roots with marketing expertise to deliver systems that actually work.

The Crows

Travis

Travis is a published author and marketing strategist who believes stories should leave you guessing or wreck you emotionally, sometimes both. His shelves are stacked with favorites like The Dresden Files, Red Rising, and The Song of Achilles. In the morning, you’ll find him connecting chapter beats like puzzle pieces (because otherwise, he’ll procrastinate all day).

Beyond books, Travis is happiest in the kitchen, cooking meals that make people rave, or hanging out with his dogs. At Pilcrow, he brings that same mix of craft and care to teaching marketing, helping authors see the real value in building systems that connect their stories to readers.

Jaime

Jaime is a writer, editor, and former Director of Content whose superpower is turning chaos into order. She’s the one who can spot what’s missing, fill in the gaps, and create a logical path forward, whether she’s editing a manuscript, writing a blog, or building a marketing workflow.

Her love for editing started by beta reading Travis’s work, pointing out plot holes and polishing language, and quickly grew into a career guiding indie authors and creating detailed, data-driven marketing campaigns. She loves digging into complex topics until every angle is covered, then simplifying them into steps authors can follow.

When she’s not writing or working with authors, you’ll find Jaime in her garden, riding her motorcycle, or cuddling with her dogs.

The Story Behind the Brand

We didn’t land on the name Pilcrow by accident. We put a lot of thought into it, because we wanted our brand to reflect not just what we do, but how we stand beside authors in their journeys.

Together, the pilcrow and the crow reflect what we’re here to do: stand beside you with the insight, adaptability, and support to help you grow as an author.

Why the Pilcrow?

The pilcrow is the paragraph symbol (¶). Historically, it marked a new paragraph in old manuscripts and carried the meaning “to write beside.” That idea stuck with us. While we’re not writing your books, we see our role as standing beside you with the marketing guidance and support you need throughout your author journey.

Why the Crow?

Crows are effing awesome. They’re clever, adaptable, and symbolic of transformation, intelligence, and positive change, all things we want to foster in the authors we work with. Plus, the “crow” lives right inside our name, which just felt like fate.
